Stedelijk Museum Breda is the museum for the heritage and history of the city and contemporary culture. In Stedelijk Museum Breda it is all about experience and connection. The connection between history and current events, art and heritage, local and global, and between different disciplines and cultures.
In the permanent collection, temporary exhibitions, activities, and online projects we show the pillars of the museum: visual art, history, and popular culture.
We do this in collaboration with numerous local and (inter)national organizations.
In the NEXT project space, which is freely accessible, we present co-creations with residents and local and regional partners on current themes.
Behind the historic facade of the museum, history, and presently come together in a freshly designed space. The first municipal historical museum was established in 1903 so that the history of Breda would not be forgotten. That is the beginning of the Breda Museum. After a merger between Breda's Museum and Museum of the Image (MOTI), the current Stedelijk Museum Breda was created in 2017. The museum has now become a central place in and of the city. With a varied collection, plenty of social and cultural projects, and all kinds of activities.
Stedelijk Museum Breda is located in a national monument: the Oudemannenhuis. One of the oldest buildings in Breda. Within a radius of one kilometer around the museum, you will find a large number of heritage sites, perfect for beautiful city walks. Think of the Grote Kerk (one of the four official Top Monuments of Brabant), the Grote Markt, the second-oldest Beguinage in the Netherlands, the Castle of Breda, the Lutheran and Waalse Churches, and the historic Spanjaardsgat.
The museum links its seasonal activities (partly) to events in the city – think of BredaPhoto and Graphic Matters – making it a real museum of the city. And that only a ten-minute walk from Central Station.
